Cheolsu conditioning techniques

Hitting forging tools should be performed regularly, for a long period of time (several years), and forging tools resistance and roughness should be increased gradually.

Training has to be performed wisely, in a controlled fashion. As human reaction to stress varies among individuals, there should be no hurry; training has to be intelligent, understanding body reactions. Conditioning training is not for damaging your body.

On the other hand, there will be no improvement if there is no controlled injuring, with minor inflammation and (sometimes) bleeding (for beginners), in the area.

When bleeding occurs, training has to be stopped until just before scar tissue starts to form (to prevent further bleeding, infections and healing delay). Healing should happen along lighter conditioning exercises, constructing a more resistant skin, killing the nerves and strengthening bones and cartilages. During the healing period, use the Formula for Conditioning Training and the Formula to Heal Open Skin Injuries or the Formula for Bruises 3-5 times a day.

Elbow conditioning with a Dallyon Gune

Many old Masters encourage students to train even when wounds are still prone to bleed. However, th same Dallyon Ju is used by many people in a Dojang, and small pieces of skin tissue and blood is left over the hitting pad during training,... by everybody. This is an ideal microbial culture for you to get infected. Be intelligent, use Hanbang liniments and do not take unnecessary risks.

Use Hanbang liniments diligently. Don't try to hurry the process and don't hurt yourself. The idea is to work gradually, over a period of months, so your body gets used to it and toughens up.

If there is inflammation or leaking of synovial membranes, training must be stopped immediately, special Hanbang liniments should be applied in the area. This is a serious injury and permanent damage can occur if not properly healed before continuing your training schedule.

Users of rudimentary Karate-like conditioning methods consider such damage normal. However, training your hands in this way may cause permanent damage to you knuckle, leading to broken cartilages, puncture of synovial capsules and painful calcium deposits.

However, cartilage damage, synovial capsules leakage and calcium deposits are well controlled with Hanbang liniments, healing really fast.

Calluses and deformities

  • When tendons suffer direct and repeated hitting for long periods, they tend to enlarge to protect the joints, as is the case of the metacarpal extensor tendon covering the metacarpal phalangeal joints. Limited oversizing of the knuckles due to tendon hypertrophy is inevitable, but can be minimized using Hanbang herbs.

  • Soft regions can suffer muscle hardening and growth of connective protective tissue.

  • Superficial bone tips (i.e. knuckles and elbows) tend to develop skin calluses (hyperkeratoses); and

  • Fingers tend to enlarge at the finger joints, when fingertips are trained hitting hard targets. Using Dallyon Tong with sand or pebbles tend to reduce nail size, thicken the skin and kill superficial nerves.

Callisthenics

In addition to your standard training, do calisthenics to build up speed, strength, reflexes and accuracy. Examples of calisthenics are:

  • Fist Push-Ups: should be practiced on the index and major knuckles (the ones used for punching).

  • Finger Push-Ups: can be practiced with all five fingers, in a two-finger fashion, or with thumbs only.

  • Plyometric drills: for power or explosiveness. You can use medicine balls, steps, jumping ropes and other complementary tools.

  • and many other training tools and resources, modern and traditional. Use your imagination.

You may easily find trained martial sports coaches in your region, to help you design a calisthenics program adapted to your age, physique and skills level.
